The Story of Osmanthus

Known as Gui Hua (桂花) in Chinese, Osmanthus is a treasured botanical throughout Chinese history, admired for its delicate fragrance and long-standing value in traditional herbal and culinary preparations.

Its history of imperial appreciation dates back more than 2,000 years. Historical records indicate that Osmanthus trees were presented to the emperor as tribute as early as 138 BC, during the Han Dynasty. By the Qing Dynasty (1644–1912), tribute offerings included not only potted Osmanthus trees, but also dried flowers and other Osmanthus-scented products.

Beyond its distinctive aroma, Osmanthus has long been enjoyed in traditional Chinese teas, desserts and herbal preparations. It is also traditionally associated with beauty and elegance.
